Government Congratulates Carino Company on 50th Anniversary

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Carino Company Limited doing business in Newfoundland and Labrador. A major player in the sealing industry in Canada, the company was incorporated in the province in 1957. As a Norwegian firm, it represents one of the earlier ties to what has become a well established business relationship between the province and Norway, in industries such as fisheries, aquaculture, and oil and gas.

The Honourable Tom Rideout, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, extended congratulations to the company today on 50 years of successful business in Newfoundland and Labrador. Minister Rideout said, This is a very special occasion and a milestone in the sealing industry in this province. It gives me a great deal of pleasure to extend congratulations to the company for this reason.

Seals are a significant source of income for thousands of families in remote coastal communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, at a time of year when employment opportunities may be limited, said the minister. Companies like Carino create secondary employment opportunities in buying and processing plants. As well, the company has been a leader in expanding into value-added processing activities such as full tanning of seal pelts.

The sealing industry is worth approximately $55 million to the provincial economy. Sealers have stated that their income from sealing can represent from 25-35 per cent of their total income. The federal and provincial governments have estimated that between 5,000 to 6,000 people derive some income from sealing in this province.

In Budget 2006, government allocated $100,000 for sealing industry communications. Carino Company Limited has been one of the key industry representatives to work actively with government in pursuing this strategy.

Our government values the sealing industry as one that provides important employment opportunities in rural areas of the province, said Minister Rideout. Carino Company Limited is one of the best examples of the employment opportunities that seal processing can provide. We are pleased to have them in this province and will continue to work closely with them as an industry stakeholder in representing the interest of the sealing industry.

Minister Rideout will bring greetings on behalf of government at the 50th anniversary celebrations of Carino Company Limited at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 28, at The Fairmont Newfoundland.
