Information and Privacy Commissioner Appointed on Acting Basis
The
Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today
announced the appointment of Ed Ring as Information and Privacy
Commissioner in an acting capacity.
�During
his career with the Provincial Government and previously during his very
successful military career, Mr. Ring acquired a depth of experience,
knowledge and skill sets that will serve the public service well in his
new position,� said Premier Williams. �I wish him well in his role as
an Officer of the House of Assembly.�
Under
Section 42.4 of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy
Act (ATIPPA), a commissioner may be appointed in an acting capacity
when the House of Assembly is not in session. A formal appointment of
the new commissioner will be made when the House of Assembly resumes.
As
commissioner, Mr. Ring has a broad range of responsibilities and powers
under the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act,
including making recommendations to ensure compliance with the
legislation.
Mr.
Ring�s appointment became effective December 17. He succeeds Phil Wall,
who served just over three years as commissioner.

Biographical Information
Ed Ring
has been an employee with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
since 1992, having served most recently as director of the appeal and
investigation division of the Public Service Commission, where he served
earlier as staffing services officer. He has also served as director of
law enforcement with the Department of Justice. Prior to joining the
Provincial Government, Mr. Ring had a successful military career for 34
years, both as a regular and reserve force officer, achieving the senior
rank of Brigadier General and the appointment of Deputy Commander Land
Force Atlantic Area in 2001.
Mr.
Ring received a bachelor of physical education from Memorial University.
During his military service, he had experience and training in
investigative, judicial and quasi-judicial functions.
