Media Advisory: Premier Williams to Participate in Memorial Day Events

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will take part in a number of events to mark Memorial Day on Sunday, July 1.

Premier Williams will lay a wreath on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador at the 90th Memorial Day Ceremony, commemorating the 91st anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont Hamel. The wreath laying ceremony will take place at the National War Memorial, Duckworth Street, at 10:55 a.m.

Premier Williams will then attend the Tommy Ricketts Memorial Ceremony scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the corner of Water Street and Job Street, St. John�s. The Premier will be joined by His Honour, the Honourable Edward Roberts, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and His Worship, Andy Wells, mayor of St. John�s. During the ceremony, Premier Williams will make a short address on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Premier Williams will then proceed to the Bowring Park Caribou Memorial to announce details of a plan to replicate the plaques at the Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial that bear the names of Newfoundlanders who gave their lives in the First World War and have no known grave sites. Joining Premier Williams for this special ceremony at 2:00 p.m. are the Lieutenant Governor; the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation; Mayor Wells; Olivier Nicolas, Consul General of France for Atlantic Canada; and members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.
