Premier Williams Invites Community Organizations as Nominees
for Council of the Federation Literacy Award

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today released details of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award and encouraged submissions of nomination for the prestigious award that this year will recognize non-profit community organizations operating in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Throughout Newfoundland and Labrador there are many community organizations that work tirelessly toward the goal of improving the literacy capabilities of our provinces residents," said Premier Williams. "I am pleased that the Council of the Federation has established this award and that my colleagues across the country recognize the importance of literacy for their citizens."

The Council of the Federation Literacy Award was established in July of 2004 to recognize outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy. A medallion is awarded yearly in each of Canadas provinces and territories in the spectrum of literacy that covers such areas as family, Aboriginal people, health, volunteers, learners and community organizations.

For 2007, nominations are now being accepted in Newfoundland and Labrador in the category of non-profit community organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to the delivery of adult literacy based programs. These organizations have taken steps to improve reading, writing and numeracy skills, which have helped to better their communities. Nominees in the community organization category must be a non-profit community organization operating in Newfoundland and Labrador that has delivered basic adult literacy programs or the provincial Adult Basic Education Level I program. The application deadline is July 6, 2007.

"Literacy is an invaluable skill, yet far too many adults in our country need to seek the help of community groups to improve their literacy levels. I am delighted that the efforts of those on the frontlines in the fight against illiteracy are being acknowledged in such a substantial way," continued Premier Williams. "As out-going chair of the Council of the Federation I am pleased to have seen first hand the importance of this award and I am proud to support this initiative."

A nomination package, and further information, is available by visiting the Council of the Federation Web site: www.councilofthefederation.ca.

The Council of the Federation comprises all 13 provincial and territorial premiers. It enables premiers to work collaboratively to strengthen the Canadian federation by fostering a constructive relationship among the provinces and territories, and with the federal government.
