Aboriginal Womens Leader Joins the Provincial Advisory Council

Annie Evans has accepted an appointment as the newest board member for the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women. The Honourable Joan Burke, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, said today that Ms. Evans is an important addition to the council because of her knowledge of womens health and Aboriginal issues.

With a long history of involvement with Aboriginal communities in Labrador, Ms. Evans has worked to advance healthy lifestyles for people throughout the region, especially among the elderly.

"Ms. Evans is committed to advancing the status of women in Labrador and through her work with the Pauktuutit Inuit Womens Association of Canada, has become a leader for Inuit womens issues in the region," said Minister Burke. "Her interest and knowledge of reclaiming Aboriginal culture and traditions, which is an issue of great importance to Aboriginal women in our province, will be a tremendous asset to the council."

The President of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women, Leslie Macleod said today, "It is important to the women of Newfoundland and Labrador that the board of the Provincial Advisory Council represent the diversity of women in our province and consist of women who are leaders in all aspects of womens equality and inclusion."

The Honourable Diane Gear, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women in the Nunatsiavut Government, also commented on todays announcement. "I am very pleased with the appointment of Annie Evans as the Inuit representative to the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women. I look forward to her involvement on the council and believe this will help advance the rights of Inuit women," said Minister Gear.

The Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women was established in 1980 as an arms-length, legislated organization that provides independent advice to government, and lobbies on behalf of the women of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ms. Evans is the 10th board member for the current council. Other board members are Phyllis Artiss, Mary Pia Benuen, Jackie Jenkins, Yamuna Kutty, Carolyn Lavers, Vanessa MacArthur, Michelle Murdoch, Phyllis Seymour, and Hilda Whelan.

"Members of the board of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women represent various cultures, professions and regions of the province. They are a valuable voice for women from every walk of life in Newfoundland and Labrador and continue to play a key role in advising me and the Provincial Government on issues that are important to women. I look forward to the contribution of Ms. Evans as we work together to ensure women share equally in the social and economic benefits of our province," said Minister Burke.
