A Memorial University alumnus and Newfoundland and Labrador business executive has been named the new chair of Memorial Universitys Board of Regents. Gilbert Dalton assumes the position effective immediately.

"Memorial plays a vital role in the social and economic life of this province. It is critical we have a strong, dedicated individual as chair of the board to ensure the universitys growth and development," said the Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. "I am confident that Mr. Daltons extensive experience in finance and economics will prove to be extremely beneficial to board members, and to the university community."

Mr. Dalton is a graduate of Memorial University and Queens University Executive Program. He worked with Ernst & Young in Toronto and Vancouver in a variety of accounting positions and in 1977, became a partner with Ernst & Young in St. Johns. It is the only university in Canada to offer a degree in maritime studies and naval architecture, and one of only four Canadian universities with an international campus. MUN is a leader in oil and gas research and has one of the best university libraries in the country.

"This government has increased support for the university in its quest for excellence," said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. "An additional $45 million was allocated in Budget 2006 for infrastructure needs, research and development and White Paper Initiatives. We are extremely proud of our university and its many accomplishments and I look forward to working with Mr. Dalton and the board of regents as they strive to make MUN a leader in every way."

Mr. Dalton said, "As a Newfoundlander and Labradorian, and a graduate of Memorial University, I am honoured to be asked to serve in this important role. Memorial is a tremendous asset for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and through its teaching and research, it plays a significant role in the economic and social well being of our province."
