Department Co-Hosts Hunter Education Instructor Conference

The Department of Environment and Conservation, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police - Canada Firearm Centre, will hold a Hunter Education and Firearm Safety Instructor Conference in Gander this weekend, from October 19-21.

"The conference is intended for Newfoundland and Labrador hunter education and firearm safety instructors who teach courses to new hunters and firearms owners in the province," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "These courses educate participants to be safe and responsible while hunting and greatly reduces the number of hunting incidents in the province."

Conference participants will receive strategic and relevant development training about hunter education and firearms safety instruction. Specific sessions related to global positioning system (GPS) navigation and bow-hunting are planned, as well as an introduction to newly available firearm and hunter education computer software programs. The conference also allows staff involved in program administration, including the Wildlife Division, College of the North Atlantic, and Chief Firearms Officer, to update instructors on new policies and procedures to enhance the delivery of courses.

"This weekends conference will provide instructors from across the province an opportunity to network and share ideas, and learn about new programs and initiatives concerning wildlife management, hunting and firearm licensing," said Minister Jackman. "It will also be an opportunity for officials from my department and other agencies to recognize the contribution instructors make to the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador and to obtain important feedback from frontline personnel involved in course delivery."
