Parks as Natures Classroom Begins This Week

The Parks as Natures Classroom program is being offered again this year to teachers and students beginning September 11 until October 23. The program is administered by the Department of Environment and Conservation.

"In the fall, some of our provincial parks and ecological reserves become outdoor classrooms for students," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "The Parks as Natures Classroom teaches students about various plants and animals that live in our environment and the important role the environment plays."

The Parks as Natures Classroom program is an environmental education program designed to give teachers and students an opportunity to learn in an outdoor setting. The program has been developed co-operatively with the Department of Education to meet the curriculum objective of Grades 1-6.

"This program has the benefits of supplementing our primary and elementary science curriculum, while at the same time promoting physical activity by getting students out into our provincial parks. I thank all the organizers involved in this innovative program and encourage teachers to take advantage of this unique learning opportunity," said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education.

Some of the topics covered in the Parks as Natures Classroom include: why wild animals are a particular colour, how to identify the different kinds of leaves, and how erosion occurs. Last year, almost 3,000 students and teachers participated in the program.

"This program is very well-received by students and teachers," said Minister Jackman. "I encourage all schools to take advantage of this educational program and experience first-hand the wonderful outdoor opportunities and natural environment our province has to offer."
