Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Clyde Jackman has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Central Newfoundland Regional Waste Management Facility
Proponent: Central Newfoundland Waste Management Committee (Reg. 1335)

The proposed site for the regional solid waste management facility is located on 368.9 hectares of land, two kilometres east of Norris Arm, between the Lewisporte Junction Road and the Norris Arm North Side access road. The development will consist of the following components:

  • Access Road
  • Scale House
  • Public Drop-off Area
  • In-Vessel Compost Facility
  • Materials Recovery Facility
  • Construction and Demolition Depot and Landfill
  • Household Hazardous Waste Area
  • Regional Landfill Facility
  • The regional solid waste management facility is intended to service communities located in the central region of Newfoundland. Construction is proposed to begin in the fall of 2007 and the facility is to be fully operational by the fall of 2011.

    The undertaking was registered on June 5, 2007; public comments are due by July 13, 2007; and the minister's decision is due by July 20, 2007.

    Abitibi District 11 (Noel Paul Brook) Amendment
    Proponent: Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. (Reg. 1336)

    The proponent proposes to harvest a total of approximately 22,000 cubic metres of timber, on a 223 hectare parcel of land near Noel Paul Brook, in central Newfoundland. This proposed harvest is outside the current five-year operating plan for District 11. Approximately two kilometres of operational road will be constructed to access the timber, which is scheduled for harvest during the summer and fall of 2007.

    The undertaking was registered on June 7, 2007; public comments are due by July 13, 2007; and the minister's decision is due by July 21, 2007.

    Tilt Hill (Burin Peninsula) ATV Trail
    Proponent: Mr. Randell W. Barnes (Reg. 1337)

    The proponent proposes to upgrade an existing 3.5 kilometre All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Trail to access an existing cabin located near Shoal Peak from Tilt Hill on the Burin Peninsula. The trail is located approximately 13 kilometres north of the Town of St. Lawrence and will join the St. Lawrence Area Trail Association�s recreational trails. The trail will be constructed to a maximum width of four metres and will also be used for snowmobile access in winter.

    The undertaking was registered on June 6, 2007; public comments are due by July 13, 2007; and, the minister's decision is due by July 21, 2007.

    The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
