Cape St. Marys Ecological Reserve Opens for 2007 Season

The Cape St. Marys Ecological Reserve and Interpretation Centre officially open for another season on Saturday, May 12. Viewing of the largest northern gannet colony in the province will be available until Sunday, October 7.

"I encourage the public to experience and explore the diversity and uniqueness of Cape St. Marys Ecological Reserve," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "The cape is also home to the second largest gannet colony in North America. Visitors and tourists can enjoy a spectacular view from the end of the cape, only 10 metres from the nesting colony, making it one of the most accessible seabird colonies in North America."

Minster Jackman noted that Budget 2007 eliminated a number of fees including Cape St. Marys. "Visitor entry fees for adults, youths and families have been waived for the Cape St. Marys Ecological Reserve and Interpretation Centre for the 2007 season," said the minister. "We want our residents to avail of everything this province has to offer and by eliminating the entry fee at Cape St. Marys we hope more people will visit this amazing place."

According to a recent study conducted in partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), ExxonMobil Canada, Environment Canadas Science Horizons program and Memorial University, the number of common murres nesting on the cliffs of Cape St. Marys reached an all time high last year. "I am pleased to learn that our management practices have helped to protect the seabirds and the ecological integrity of Cape St. Marys Ecological Reserve," said Minister Jackman. "Cape St. Marys is one of the many natural places in this province that deserves special attention."

The Cape St. Marys Ecological Reserve and Interpretation Centre are open seven days a week and interpreters are available to provide information and offer interpretation programs and guided tours.
