Environmental Assessment Bulletin 

Environment and Conservation Minister Clyde Jackman has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act. 

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED: 

Abitibi-Consolidated District 11 (Mill Pond) Five Year Plan Amendment:
Proponent: Abitibi-Consolidated Company of Canada                                 (Reg.1322) 

The proposal is to harvest, on an operational trial basis, a total of approximately 66,000 - 100,000 cubic metres of pre-commercially thinned areas, representing approximately 660 hectares in the Mill Pond area, south of Grand Falls-Windsor.  The project is to commence during the summer and fall of 2007.  The purpose of these operational trials is to determine stand health, stand productivity and harvesting productivity, including a cost-benefit analysis for this type of harvest.  Approximately two kilometres of existing operational road will be up-graded.  The undertaking was registered on April 30, 2007; public comments are due by June 5, 2007; and the minister's decision is due by June 14, 2007. 

Lamaline Mink Farm                                                                          (Reg. 1321)
Proponent: Mr. Clem Benteau                                      
 

The proposed undertaking is located on Route 220, bordered on the north by the main road into Lamaline and to the south by Flagstaff Point.  Construction will include access road development, border fencing, two mink sheds (150 metres by 14 metres, 60 metres by nine metres), a manure pad, a cold storage facility (30 metres by 18 metres), a shavings shed (eight metres by 23 metres), office building (three metres by six metres), and equipment storage Room (13 metres by 23 metres). Road construction is to commence in June 2007 and the remainder from August to September 2007.  The undertaking was registered on April 26, 2007; public comments are due by June 5, 2007; and the minister's decision is due by June 10, 2007. 

COMPONENT STUDY RECEIVED FOR PUBLIC REVIEW:  

Marine Environment Component Study
Long Harbour Commercial Nickel Processing Plant Project                      (Reg. 1243)
Proponent:   Voisey's Bay Nickel Company 

The proponent has submitted the required Marine Environment Component Study to provide baseline data for the environmental impact statement of the project.  Included are Chapters on:     

  • Climate and Oceanography,
  • Marine Ecology,
  • Commercial Fisheries and Aquaculture,
  • Bald Eagle,
  • Marine Birds and Other Avifauna, and
  • River Otter.

Public comments must be received not later than Monday, June 5, 2007.   The minister will decide if this Component Study is acceptable no later than Tuesday June 19, 2007.   For further information on this project, contact the chairperson of the assessment committee, Carl Strong at 729-0834 or e-mail at cstrong@gov.nl.ca
