Earth Day Celebrated on April 22

Take the Next Step is the theme for Earth Day 2007. On April 22, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are encouraged to join millions of people worldwide to do their part to protect and conserve the environment.

"Each year on April 22 people from across the globe take time to spruce up their part of the planet," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "Our province may only occupy a small space on the earth however the actions we take to protect our environment will make a huge difference now and for future generations. A healthy environment means healthy people."

Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. More than six million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in events and projects to address local environmental issues. Earth Day provides the opportunity for positive actions and results.

The minister noted that there are many things people can do to demonstrate they care about the environment. "This Earth Day, I ask you to show your commitment to our environment by making an extra effort to do something positive. Plant a tree, cleanup a community or beach, recycle more and compost more, reduce home energy use, and consider the environment when you make a purchase."

The minister also encourages the public to visit the 2007 Agrifood and Garden Show being held at the Mount Pearl Glacier this weekend. The Pesticides Control Division of the department will provide information about reducing unnecessary pesticide use and managing pests by maintaining a healthy lawn and garden.

"While our province has good reason to celebrate the abundance of natural resources, we still face environmental challenges," said Minister Jackman. "Everyone has a role to play and we must act to ensure our daily actions do not pollute the fragile environment that we and our wildlife depend on to survive. On April 22 and everyday, please do your part to protect and preserve our place on earth."
