Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Reidville Mink Farm                                                                                   (Reg. 1309)
Proponent: DTK Agriculture Ltd.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Cox�s Cove Mink Farm Expansion                                                              (Reg. 1311)
Proponent: NuMink Inc.

The proponent proposes to expand the existing mink farm located approximately one kilometre east of Cox�s Cove, Bay of Islands, from their current 5,000 female breeders to 10,000 female breeders. Four additional pelter sheds (32 feet by 50 feet), two breeder sheds (37 feet by 450 feet) and a new shavings storage shed will be constructed. The expansion is tentatively scheduled to begin in the spring of 2007. The undertaking was registered on February 14, 2007; public comments are due by March 21, 2007 and the minister's decision is due by March 31, 2007.

Clarenville Chitin Plant                                                                             (Reg. 1312)
Proponent: Barry Group

The proponent proposes to develop a Chitin processing plant adjacent to the Barry Group's Shrimp facility in Clarenville near Red Point. Construction will consist of clearing and backfilling to prepare the site. A metal building measuring 16 metres by 16 metres and 8 metres high will be constructed. Several large processing tanks will be fabricated. Construction is scheduled to start on April 1, 2007, with completion anticipated in approximately 18 months. The operation involves processing shrimp shells into a powder, utilizing caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite and water. The undertaking was registered on February 15, 2007; public comments are due by March 22, 2007 and the minister's decision is due by April 01, 2007.

Carmanville Mink Farm                                                                          (Reg. 1313)
Proponent: Mr. Terry Wheaton

The proponent proposes to establish a 1,000 female breeder mink farm located off Route 330, approximately three kilometres east of the turn-off to Main Point. The construction will include three barns (100 metres by 12.5 metres) to house both pelter and breeder cages, a storage shed (20 metres by 30 metres), and a manure pad (approximately 6.1 metres by 6.1 metres). Manure will be used at a local farm for fertilization. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in July of 2007. The undertaking was registered on February 15, 2007; public comments are due by March 22, 2007 and the minister's decision is due by April 01, 2007.

Dunville Sewage Treatment Facility                                                        (Reg. 1314)
Proponent: Town of Placentia

It is proposed to develop a two-cell aerated lagoon on a small peninsula of land approximately 80 metres from Route 100 that extends into Northeast Arm. In addition to the lagoon system, the construction will consist of a 300m access road, lift station to pump the sewage up the slope, an outfall into Northeast arm, associated sewage mains and a disinfection system. Each cell will be 65 metres by 65 metres and 5 metres deep. The undertaking was registered on February 15, 2007; public comments are due by March 22, 2007 and the minister's decision is due by April 01, 2007.
