Student Voting

The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer is encouraging students to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming Provincial General Election on October 9, 2007.

In order to qualify to vote, you must be:

  • A Canadian Citizen;
  • At least 18 years of age on polling day;
  • Ordinarily resident in the Province on October 8, 2007;
  • Ordinarily resident in the district and polling division.

To be "ordinarily resident", you may consider where you would normally reside. There are three examples that may be helpful to consider:

- If you are a student who is attending an educational institution and is currently living at - home, then your home is your place of "ordinary residence". You should be included on the voters list in the polling division where your home is located and vote there.

- If you are a student who is living away from home to attend school, but you are planning to return to your home town upon completion of your education, then your family home is your place of "ordinary residence." You should be included on the voters list in the polling division where your home is located and vote there.

- If you are a student who is living away from the family home and are not returning to the family home upon completion of your education, then you may consider your current residence your "ordinary residence." You should be included on the voters list in the polling division where you are currently residing and vote in that polling division.

Additionally, students have the option of voting in the Advance Poll on October 2, 2007 or by Special Ballot, which is taking place until October 2, 2007. For more information on student voting, Advance Poll, and Special Ballot, or for other inquiries, please visit the Elections NL Web site: www.gov.nl.ca/elections , or call (toll-free) 1-877-729-7987.

Remember, choose to vote...vote to choose!
