Jury Lists

The Jury Act, 1991 directs the High Sheriff of Newfoundland and Labrador to compile and maintain a list of names and addresses of all persons eligible for jury duty. Section 4 of the Act requires that all persons who are Canadian citizens, of the age of 18 years and resident in the province to serve as a juror unless a person is exempted or disqualified under the Act.

In compiling the jury lists, the High Sheriff has the right to access the records of the province's Motor Registration Division, information concerning beneficiaries under the Medical Care Insurance Act, 1999 data respecting electors compiled by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, as well as any other source which the Lieutenant-Governor in Council may prescribe. The High Sheriff has requested the assistance of the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer in obtaining information respecting potential jurors and, so as to fulfill its legal obligation, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer will, upon completion of the present enumeration process, provide to the High Sheriff access to elector records for the specific and sole purpose of preparation of jury lists.
