Education December 27, 2007 Provincial Government Scholarship Winners Announced Hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships has been awarded to 201 graduating high school students. The Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education, today released the names of the recipients of the Provincial Governments electoral and centennial scholarships. Each student will receive a scholarship valued at $1,000 to be used at a post-secondary institution of their choice. "This is a tremendous boost for these students that recognizes the years of hard work they have dedicated to their studies," said Minister Burke. "We know the cost of post-secondary education can place a burden on students and their families. We are pleased to offer these scholarships to help offset these costs." The minister also announced the winner of the Junior Jubilee Scholarship, valued at $2,500 which is awarded to the student who achieves the highest Department of Educations scholarship score. The winner this year is Stephanie Powell, a graduate of Roncalli Central High in Port Saunders. The winner of the Constable W.C. Moss Scholarship is Stephanie Walsh from Bishops College in St. Johns. This scholarship is provided to the son or daughter of a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (active, retired or deceased) who achieves the highest Department of Education scholarship score. The scholarship score is derived from the results of public exams. The minister said that providing funding for students education and future is one of the most important investments government can make. "The Provincial Government has reduced interest rates on student loans, provided non-repayable, up-front grants, and has reduced the amount parents are required to contribute to a students education," said Minister Burke. "These are strategic investments that recognize that college and university training are critical for individual success and will contribute to our provinces future prosperity and self-reliance. I offer my sincere congratulations to each of these bright young people and wish them all the best as they begin their post-secondary training." -30- Media contact: BACKGROUNDER High School Scholarship Winners 2007 Name School Junior Jubilee Scholarship St. Barbe Powell, Stephanie Roncalli Central High Constable W.C.
