Exploits Valley Intermediate School Extensions Poised to Begin

Residents of Grand Falls-Windsor will soon see construction begin to expand and renovate Exploits Valley Intermediate Greenwood Division. The Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education, announced today that government has approved approximately $2.8 million to carry out this building project.

"The tender has been awarded to Bluebird Investments Ltd., of Grand Falls-Windsor, and we expect work will begin shortly," said Minister Burke. "I know the students, teachers and administration have had some challenges using two school buildings, and I know they are looking forward to soon being together under one roof."

Renovation plans include a new stage in the gymnasium, change rooms, two more classrooms, a technology education suite, and a home economics room. The renovations will also provide new space for the guidance counselor, visiting itinerant teachers and social workers. The enclosed courtyard created by the extension will be leveled off and sodded, creating a sheltered outdoor space for students, teachers and staff. The main entrance will have a new lift which will improve accessibility to the second floor.

"I'm very pleased to see this project proceed," said Ray Hunter, MHA for the District of Windsor-Springdale. "This redevelopment was greatly needed and I am certain that students and teachers will be very happy with the results."

Thomas Kendell, chair of the Nova Central School Board, commented, "The board is delighted that the funding is now in place to extend the former St. Mikes High School to accommodate all the grades seven, eight and nines in one building, as part of the restructuring plan for the Grand Falls-Windsor system. Those improvements will certainly enhance the educational opportunities for students in Grand Falls-Windsor."

Minister Burke said, "I am confident that the entire school community will be pleased when this project is complete. The renovations will ensure that students and teachers will experience a better learning environment that provides every opportunity for success in high school and beyond."

The minister also noted that since 2004, government has budgeted more than $80 million on school construction, repairs and renovations. "Government believes in education. We believe in making strategic investments that will strengthen our education system, so that the students of today have the foundation necessary to become the leaders of tomorrow. We can make no greater investment than that," said Minister Burke.
