Next Phase for Mobile School Begins

The completion of a new school for the Southern Shore is about to move into high gear. Olympic Construction of St. Johns has been awarded the tender for Phase II of the Mobile school construction project. This represents the bulk of construction, with work expected to be completed for a winter 2008 opening.

"Government is making significant investments to improve the quality of education on all fronts, including upgrading school buildings across the province," said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. "The Mobile school project is valued at approximately $9 million, which will result in a modern, state-of-the art facility for students and teachers in the community of Mobile and the surrounding area."

The new school will include a science laboratory, a skilled trades and technology suite, specially designed facilities for students with disabilities, a guidance centre, a modern library resource centre, a fitness centre, a gymnasium, an art room, lunch room and music room. Each classroom and instructional area will be fitted with computers which will be connected to each other through a local area network. The school will also be fitted with a full mechanical ventilation system and the area around the school will be landscaped and have a paved parking lot.

Dr. Darin King, CEO/Director of Education of the Eastern School District, welcomed the news that the next phase of construction is about to begin. "The teachers, students and school community of Mobile are excited about their new school. I am delighted that we are making progress on the construction and look forward to the day when we will open the doors to this new, state-of-the-art facility."

Minister Burke added that providing quality education is a priority for government, and this includes making sure schools are safe, healthy learning environments for our teachers and students. "This year alone, $37.5 million was approved for maintenance and capital work in the K-12 system. Over the past three years, government has approved approximately $19 million on air quality initiatives, including testing and remediation, as well as new roofs, windows, siding and ventilation. Commitment to improved maintenance, new schools and modern curriculum and programming will all contribute to our students success and, ultimately, our overall success as a province," said Minister Burke.
