Business Department Seeking Opportunities in Qatar and Japan
The Honourable Kevin OBrien, Minister of
Business will travel to Qatar and Japan to explore business attraction
opportunities for Newfoundland and Labrador March 5-15. Minister OBrien
and department officials will meet with senior members of government and
executives of private companies in both countries to discuss business
opportunities in an effort to attract investment to the province.
A key activity within the Department of Business is business
attraction. It is critical in a competitive global marketplace that we
actively promote the benefits of doing business in Newfoundland and
Labrador to foreign companies, said Minister OBrien. The province has
already established business connections in both Qatar and Japan, and it
is our intent to leverage our existing ties in these countries.
On March 5, the delegation departs for Doha, Qatar, and will hold
meetings with the Chief of the Emiri of Diwan, the Deputy Prime
Minister, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Education, and the
Foreign Minister. The delegation will also meet with private companies
in the region to discuss possibilities for future business partnerships.
Topics of discussion will include business attraction opportunities for
the province, and potential supply and demand issues for the economy of
Qatar. Presentations will be given regarding the current infrastructure
of the province, and the existing business base and economy in
Newfoundland and Labrador. Meetings will also be held with organizations
that are based in the province with operations in Qatar.
On March 10, Minister OBrien and officials continue to Tokyo, Japan to
participate in the 2007 Agriculture and Agri-Food Investment Seminar.
The purpose of the seminar is to communicate to the Japanese agri-food
industry opportunities that exist in the agriculture and agri-food
sector in Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition to highlighting the
agriculture and agri-foods sectors, there will be a presentation on the
aquaculture industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. Meetings will also be
held with business leaders in Japan interested in conducting business in
the province.
The future of Newfoundland and Labrador is dependent on business growth
and investment. For the province to be successful, we must target
opportunities for which we have a competitive advantage. We, as a
province, must market globally to promote inward investment, thereby
strengthening our economy and creating jobs, said Minister OBrien.
