Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced road improvements totaling over $2.88 million for the Trinity-Bay de Verde area under the 2006-07 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"Government has made improving transportation infrastructure a major priority," said Minister Taylor. "The betterment of our transportation network will help us continue to ensure economic benefits for the people of Newfoundland and Labardor."

The road improvements planned for the Trinity-Bay de Verde area are:

  • "This is a very significant infrastructure investment in my district," said Trinity-Bay de Verde MHA, Charlene Johnson. "The work that will be completed as a result of this funding will make road travel safer and more enjoyable for the people of the district as well as visitors to the area."

As part of the Provincial Roads Improvement Program, government has pre-committed $60 million in the 2006-07 budget which includes $48.4 million in new money and $11.6 million carried over from the previous construction season.

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program has doubled in value from $30 million in 2004-05 to $60 million in 2006-07.

This is the earliest the department has received budget approval in decades, which allows the tendering and construction processes to begin much sooner.
