Harbour Main - Whitbourne roads to be improved

Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced road projects for the Harbour Main - Whitbourne area valued at $1.5 million under the 2006-07 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program provides funding for upgrades and improvements to the provincial highway network throughout the province.

"This program is intended to address the most pressing issues related to transportation infrastructure in the province," said Minister Taylor. "And it illustrates the provinces commitment to a better provincial transportation system."

Planned road work for the district includes:

  • Replace existing culvert Route 60, Georgetown Stream;
  • Replace existing culvert Route 60, Doyles Brook, Lakeview;
  • Replace existing culverts Route 81, Bullrush Pond Stream, Markland;
  • Replace existing culverts at Rodneys Marsh Stream, Colliers Harbour Road;
  • Upgrade and resurface Route 60, Marysvale towards Brigus;
  • Upgrade and pave a section of Route 71 in Makinsons;
  • Upgrade and pave Mill Road in Georgetown;
  • Upgrade and pave a section of Colliers Harbour Road;
  • Upgrade and pave Motion Road to Emerald Vale;
  • Drainage improvements on Turks Water Road.
  • Minister Tom Hedderson, Harbour Main - Whitbourne MHA, said: "This is great news and I am very pleased that this much needed road work will begin in my district. This will go a long way in improving the lives of residents and also make road travel easier for tourists visiting the area."

    As part of the Provincial Roads Improvement Program, government has pre-committed $60 million in the 2006-07 budget, which includes $48.4 million in new money and $11.6 million carried over from the previous construction season.

    The Provincial Roads Improvement Program has doubled in value from $30 million in 2004-05 to $60 million in 2006-07.

    This is the earliest the department has received budget approval in decades, which allows the tendering and construction processes to begin much sooner.
