Road work announced for Bonavista South

Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced road and bridge projects totaling $3.375 million for Bonavista South. Funding for projects is made available under the 2006-07 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"Bonavista South is another benefactor of the Provincial Roads Improvement Program that provides funding for upgrades and improvements to the provincial highway network throughout the province," said Minister Taylor.

The work includes:

  • Replace Walkhams Bridge, Route 235, Bonavista;
  • Upgrade and repave Route 230 from Morleys Siding to Greenings restaurant;
  • Resurface section of Route 235 from Jiggin Head to Plate Cove East including repair of frost bumps at Plate Cove West;
  • Upgrade and re-pave section of Route 230 beginning 1.2 km south of Morleys Siding and ending at intersection of Route 233;
  • Resurface Route 234-14 through Charleston to the fish plant;
  • Upgrade and resurface road at Tickle Cove;
  • Minor upgrading of Route 236, Stock Cove Road;
  • Upgrade and pave gravel road at the end of Princeton.
  • Roger Fitzgerald, MHA for Bonavista South, said: "On behalf of the people of Bonavista South, I commend government for its continued commitment to the transportation infrastructure of this district and the province as a whole."

    As part of the Provincial Roads Improvement Program, government has pre-committed $60 million in the 2006-07 budget, which includes $48.4 million in new money and $11.6 million carried over from the previous construction season.

    The Provincial Roads Improvement Program has doubled in value from $30 million in 2004-05 to $60 million in 2006-07.

    This is the earliest the department has received budget approval in decades, which allows the tendering and construction processes to begin much sooner.
