Road work announced for Conception Bay South

Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced road and bridge improvements totaling $800,000 in Conception Bay South. The projects are funded under the 2006-07 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"Conception Bay South is the largest town in Newfoundland and Labrador and one of our fastest growing," said Minister Taylor.

"As a result, the pressure on the existing infrastructure continues to increase. So, these projects will go a long way toward improving the transportation network in the area."

The projects include: a slope stabilization for the C.B.S. Bypass from Dunns Hill to Legion Road; resurfacing of Route 60 from Pettens Road towards Seal Cove Road; and rehabilitation of the Manuels River Feeder Canal West and the Manuels River Spillway Bridge West.

Also, as part of the Canadian Strategic Infrastructure Fund, the Department of Transportation and Works will undertake a $4.5 million rehabilitation of 10 kilometres of Trans Canada Highway between Manuels Interchange and Thomas Pond and correct sections of the T.C.H. with rutting problems between the Holyrood Interchange and Salmonier Line.

"Im very pleased to see governments commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in Conception Bay South," said Terry French, MHA for the district of Conception Bay South.

"As the population in our town continues to grow, so does the traffic. Therefore, these roads improvements are greatly welcomed," added Mr. French.

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program provides funding for upgrades and improvements to the provincial highway network throughout the province.

As part of the Provincial Roads Improvement Program, government has pre-committed $60 million in the 2006-07 budget which includes $48.4 million in new money and $11.6 million carried over from the previous construction season.
