Road work announced for St. Barbe district

Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced road and bridge projects totaling over $4.55 million for the St. Barbe district. Funding for projects is made available under the 2006-07 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"The Provincial Roads Improvement Program provides funding for upgrades and improvements to the provincial highway network throughout the province," said Minister Taylor.

Four million dollars will be spent to pave a section from Daniels Harbour to Bellburns (Route 430), resurface Route 430 from Parsons Pond to Portland Creek and resurface Three Mile Rock to Parsons Pond.

The remaining $550,000 will repair the Torrent River, Portland Creek and Castor River bridges.

"Route 430 is important for residential, commercial and tourist traffic," added Minister Taylor.

"It services the entire Northern Peninsula and is the primary route into southern Labrador."

Wally Young, MHA for St. Barbe district, said: "Im excited that our government recognizes the need to make such a significant investment in our road infrastructure, and we can now go forward with these much-needed improvements in St. Barbe District.

"In particular, Route 430 is well-traveled, and the road work will go a long way to enhance that section of highway."

As part of the Provincial Roads Program, government has pre-committed $60 million in the 2006-07 budget, which includes $48.4 million in new money and $11.6 million carried over from this construction season.

This is the earliest the department has received budget approval in decades, which allows the tendering and construction processes to begin much sooner.
