Provincial Boys Volleyball Tournaments Held
This Weekend
School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador
will crown five new vollleyball champions this coming weekend. Boys
teams from throughout the province will be vying for championship
banners in 2A, 3A, 4A, Fair Play and Small Schools Divisions.
St. Mark�s School, Kings Cove and Bishop White All Grade in Port Rexton
are co-hosting the 2A Boys Tournament. Ten teams will compete in a two
division round-robin format to determine the semi-finalists. Division 1
will play at Kings Cove and will consist of St. Marks, Gill Memorial
(Musgrave Hr), Eric G. Lambert School (Churchill Falls), Mountain Field
Academy (Forteau) and John Watkins Academy (Hermitage). Division 2 will
play round-robin matches at Port Rexton and will see action between
Bishop White All Grade, Random Island Academy, Grandy�s River Collegiate
(Burnt Islands), Fortune Bay Academy (St. Bernards) and Cape John
Collegiate (LaScie).
Games get underway at each venue at 8 a.m. Friday and continue
throughout the day, and into Saturday morning. Following the conclusion
of round robin play, the top two teams from each division will meet in
the semi-finals at 11 a.m. The winners meet in the championship game at
1:30.
Riverwood Academy in Wings Point is the site of the Boys 3A Volleyball
championships. Ten teams will also compete in this tournament. Division
A will consist of Riverwood Academy, Pasadena Academy, J. M. Olds
Collegiate (Twillingate), Roncalli Central High (Port Saunders) and Holy
Trinity High (Torbay). Division B participants will see action between
Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Goose Bay), Leo Burke Academy (Bishops
Falls), St. James Regional High (Port aux Basques), Lewisporte
Collegiate and Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville).
The tournament gets underway Thursday at 5:30 and continues throughout
Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The top two teams advance to semi-finals
and the championship game Saturday afternoon.
Clarenville High is the host school for the Boys 4A Volleyball
tournament. Vying for the championship are 10 teams split into two
divisions. Division A consists of Clarenville High, Booth Memorial (St.
John�s), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Gander Collegiate, and
Gonzaga High (St. John�s). Playing in Division B is Carmanville School,
Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John�s), Corner Brook High, Discovery
Collegiate (Bonavista) and O�Donel High (Mount Pearl). The tournament
gets underway at 12 noon at Clarenville High and Clarenville Middle
School. The round robin portion continues throughout Saturday.
The top two teams advance to the semi-finals at 12:30 on Saturday in
both venues. The gold medal match is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday
afternoon.
Bay d�Espoir Academy in St. Albans is the site of the Fair Play
Volleyball Championships featuring six teams. The team format will be a
round-robin schedule. Vying for the provincial banner will be Bay
d�Espoir Academy, Amos Comenius School (Hopedale), Baccalieu Collegiate
(Old Perlican), Heritage Collegiate (Lethbridge), King Academy (Hr.
Breton) and Tricentia Academy (Arnolds Cove).
The first match of the tournament is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. Friday and
continues throughout Saturday morning.. Semi final 1 will feature the
4th place team from the round robin and the 1stoverall. The second
semi-final will feature the 2nd and 3rd place teams. The winners meet in
the championship game.
Main River Academy is the host school for the Small Schools Boys
Volleyball tournament. Eight teams will compete in a 2 division
tournament. Division 1 action will consist of Swift Current Academy
Raiders, St. Mary�s All Grade Wolves (Mary�s Harbour), CCM Grizzlies (Conche,
Croque, Main Brook) and Main River Academy Warriors. Basque Memorial
Whalers (Red Bay), St. Anne Kegnamogwom Eagles (Conne River), Our Lady
of Labrador Vikings (West St. Modeste) and Long Island Academy Sabers
(Beaumont)
The tournament gets underway at 9:30 Friday morning and continues
throughout Friday and Saturday, with semi-finals and championship game
following.
In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports
Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First
Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will
nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship
medal.
The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the
winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted
Championship Banner.
