Taekwondo Benefits from ALCs Support of the Commonwealth Games Bid and Amateur Sport

Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) was pleased to present the Newfoundland and Labrador WTF Taekwondo Association with a $5,000 donation as part of the promotion of the Commonwealth Games Special Edition Super Pack. ALC held a celebration of sport in St. Johns in September, and each guest was given the opportunity to select their favourite local sport organization to be entered in a prize draw.

"We wanted to ensure that local sport organizations benefited directly from this special initiative in support of sport and the Commonwealth Games Bid," noted ALC President and CEO Michelle Carinci. "The Share the Dream ticket contains 10 $5,000 prizes, and the winners of those prizes are able to direct a $5,000 donation to a local sport organization. We felt it was only fitting to kick off the promotion by holding a similar draw at our launch event in Newfoundland and Labrador."

Rodger Randell of St. Johns was the lucky guest, and his sport of choice was taekwondo. "It felt great, especially to support taekwondo which doesnt always get a lot of recognition," he said. "Its nice to do something for a sport I enjoy."

Kim Randell is the secretary of the Taekwondo Association. She says the donation is very important for them.

"We didnt believe it at first, but we were thrilled beyond belief, it was fantastic," she said. "We can certainly put it to good use. This association is really quite young, so any amount of help we get is great, especially in terms of athlete development and training seminars."

The Commonwealth Games Bid will receive $500,000 of the proceeds of the Special Edition Super Pack to help in its efforts to bring the Commonwealth Games to Atlantic Canada. Halifax was selected as Canadas bid city in December 2005 and is currently competing against Glasgow, Scotland and Abuja, Nigeria to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The deadline for submission of the bid is May 9, 2007 with final selection of the host city to take place on November 9, 2007. Atlantic Lottery turned 30 this year. All in all, its been a "win-win" for Atlantic Canada. Its been a win for players for literally 4.5 billion reasons: thats the amount ALC has awarded in prizes to winners over the past three decades. Its also been a win for Atlantic Canada because, over the past 30 years, every penny of ALCs profit - $4.7 billion dollars since 1976 - has been returned to the region through Atlantic Canada's four provincial governments.
