Second round of projects
approved under CEDP
Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation Tom Hedderson today announced that 16 projects have been
approved under the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP),
totaling approximately $396,700.
"I am pleased to announce the second
round of projects approved under this year�s Cultural Economic
Development Program," said Minister Hedderson. "Our investment in these
projects demonstrates our commitment to growing and developing cultural
industries in communities across the province and to keeping our
creative talent in the province."
Under the CEDP program, government will
invest a total of $2 million this year to help develop arts and heritage
projects across the province. The arts sector will receive support for
operations, marketing, professional development and export for cultural
products. The heritage sector will receive support to assist with
conservation, presentation and interpretation of heritage resources, as
well as professional development for heritage professionals.
CEDP projects were selected on the
strength of business plans, artistic vision and potential for
development within a specific sector. For more information on

BACKGROUNDER
Projects approved through the Cultural Economic Development Program
Museum Association of Newfoundland and
Labrador (MANL)
The Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador received $95,000 in
operational support to continue its mandate to grow and develop the
province�s museum sector. Specific investment will be directed toward
strengthening the level of expertise within the heritage sector and
raising the professional quality and authenticity of heritage assets in
the province.
Signal Hill Tattoo
The Signal Hill Tattoo received $42,300 towards the cost of managing its
award- winning historical animation program and the operation of the
Quidi Vidi Battery Provincial Historic Site.
Burnside Heritage Foundation Inc.
The Burnside Heritage Foundation Inc. received $8,000 to continue the
archaeological work at the Beaches archaeological site in Burnside. The
Beaches archaeological site is one of Newfoundland�s oldest human
habitations. Archaeological excavations in 1970 revealed that the
Maritime Archaic occupation of the site began 5,000 years ago.
Association of Heritage Industries (AHI)
The Association of Heritage Industries received $30,000 in operational
support. Founded in 2000, the AHI seeks to bring together the heritage
community to share expertise and experience; speak with a single voice
on important heritage issues; promote the value of the province�s
heritage and promote high standards in heritage preservation and
development.
Department of Linguistics,
Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN)
The Department of Linguistics received $6,600 to offset costs for the
preparation of a digital database and map atlas of Labrador Innu place
names.
Northern Peninsula Heritage Society
The Northern Peninsula Heritage Society received $5,000 to offset costs
related to continuing research on the Basque presence in Newfoundland
and the presentation of this research at an academic conference in Plum
Point in September 2006.
Newfoundland Independent Filmmakers�
Cooperative (NIFCO)
The Newfoundland Independent Filmmakers� Cooperative received $50,000
toward its operational costs. NIFCO plays a vital role in developing the
film and video sector though professional development programs such as
the First Time Filmmaker Development Program and the Introductory
Filmmaking Course.
Producers� Association of Newfoundland
and Labrador (PAN)
PAN received $35,000 towards its International Market Access Program (IMAP)
designed to strengthen the presence of Newfoundland and Labrador
export-ready films and television productions in the international
market place. PAN is a non-profit organization of film and video
producers who work to promote, organize and support the Newfoundland and
Labrador film and video industry.
Writers Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (WANL)
WANL received $60,000 to help support operational costs and a series of
professional development projects. A non-profit organization, WANL works
to serve the needs of writers in the province. The organization
organizes a number of programs, workshops and author readings.
Stephenville Theatre Festival
The Stephenville Theatre Festival, one of the longest running theatre
festivals in the province, received $25,000 toward the operational cost
of producing its 2006 summer season.
Placentia Theatre Festival
The Placentia Area Theatre Corporation received $5,000 to offset costs
related to its 2006 summer theatre program which runs June 5 � September
1.
Tuckamore Festival
The Tuckamore Festival received $5,000 towards the marketing costs for
its 6th annual festival in August. Since 2001, the festival has
presented a unique two-week experience that offers a mix of established
and emerging chamber artists. The festival also presents a young artist
program.
Artistic Fraud
Artistic Fraud received $2,800 to attend and make a presentation at the
Gateway to the Americas international trade show in Mexico City
in June. Based in St. John�s, Artistic Fraud is dedicated to developing
and producing new, innovative and original work from Newfoundland and
Labrador artists.
Jonny Harris/ Andy Jones
Productions
Actor/comedian Jonathan Harris received $2,000 to offset costs
associated with the production of marketing materials for his one-man
show Out of the Bog which was presented at two festivals:
Magnetic North in June and the UNO Festival in May.
Neighborhood Dance Works
(NDW)
NDW received $10,000 towards its operational costs. This contemporary
dance company has built a strong profile on the national scene. They
also provide opportunities for performance and professional development
in the dance sector.
St. John�s Jazz Festival (SJJF)
SJJF received $15,000 towards the cost of presenting the 2006 Festival.
The SJJF offers concerts and workshops featuring some of the top local,
Canadian and international musicians performing a variety of jazz and
world music.
