Minister encourages residents and tourists to take part in International Lighthouse Day

Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, encourages residents and tourists to participate in festivities in honour of the fifth International Lighthouse Day on Sunday, August 20, in Bonavista.

"As the summer nears its end, I encourage residents and tourists alike to get out and participate in a fun-filled day that represents an important part of our provinces history," said Minister Hedderson. "This day showcases a rich aspect of our maritime heritage by highlighting the people who work to preserve our lighthouses, lightvessels and other navigational aids."

In recognition of International Lighthouse Day, the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site will be hosting a day of fun events and entertainment. Events begin at 1:30 p.m. and continue until 5:00 p.m.

Activities will include local entertainment and a reading by writer and poet Grace Butler Difalco, granddaughter of former lightkeeper Hubert Abbott. For children there will be a treasure hunt and a magic show. They will also paint signal flags that will fly as a greeting to passing ships. Refreshments will be served.

Admission will be free at the lighthouse and the Mockbeggar Plantation Provincial Historic Site. Visitors to the lighthouse will be eligible for a prize draw. Everyone welcome.
