Minister congratulates
Newfoundland and Labrador teams on national victories
Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister
Tom Hedderson today congratulated the members of the Newfoundland Rock
rugby team and the Kellys Pub Junior Canadians fastpitch softball team
on their outstanding performances in national sporting events this past
weekend.
On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador I commend the
performances made by both the Newfoundland Rock rugby team and the
Kellys Pub junior softball team, said Minister Hedderson Both teams
truly represent the very best of Newfoundland and Labrador and have
proven that our athletes can compete, and in fact win, when challenged
by the some of the best in the country.
The Newfoundland Rock rugby team defended their Rugby Canada Super
League (RCSL) title on Saturday when they defeated, for the second year
in a row, Saskatchewans Prairie Fire. The Rock outscored their
opponents 28-14 to claim their first national title on home turf.
The Kellys Pub Junior Canadians softball team, who represented
Newfoundland and Labrador in Drummondville, Quebec on Sunday, won the
National Junior Mens Fastpitch Championship championship. The 7-3 win
over the defending champion, Scarborough, Ontario Wolverines, marked the
third gold medal victory for the province but the first since St. Johns
won in 1976.
These teams displayed the dedication and determination in sport that
all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should be proud of, said Minister
Hedderson. These national titles prove that our province is home to
some of the best athletes in the country. Their performance has raised
the bar for athletics in the province and at the national level.
