Call for Hall of Fame nominations

John McGrath, chair of the Board of Governors � Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame, announced today that the Board of Governors is seeking nominations for the three categories of membership and enrollment into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame for the year 2006. Mr. McGrath said, �The Board of Governors is again this year looking for the sport community�s and public�s cooperation in nominating worthy Athletes, Builders or Athlete/Builders deserving of this recognition. Individuals currently enrolled in any of the provincial and regional sports halls of fame should be considered for this prestigious recognition.�

The Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame is designed to recognize, honour and pay tribute to all individuals, groups, associations and teams on the basis of playing ability, sportsmanship and character who have achieved extra-ordinary distinction in any sport, whether that distinction be achieved in amateur and/or professional athletics. It recognizes, honours and pays tribute to those individuals, groups, associations and teams who have given distinguished services and who have made a major contribution to the development and advancement of amateur sport in Newfoundland and Labrador. The provincial hall of fame also encourages the development of all aspects of sport by permanently recording the achievements and history of such individuals, groups, associations and teams.

Induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame is the highest sporting honour this province can bestow on an Athlete, Builder or Athlete/Builder and this opportunity is only available when individuals, who have achieved outstanding success and made a significant contribution to the development and growth of sport in Newfoundland and Labrador, are recognized by their peers for their contribution and then nominated for this recognition.

The deadline to submit nominations for the 2006 Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame is August 31, 2006. Nomination forms are available from Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (SNL).
