Minister sends best wishes
to Newfoundland and Labrador�s Special Olympics Team
Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation, sends best wishes today to the Newfoundland and
Labrador Special Olympics team as they travel to Brandon, Manitoba to
compete in the 2006 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games. The Games take
place July 17-22.
�Congratulations, best wishes and safe travels to the 2006 Newfoundland
and Labrador Special Olympics team as they travel to Manitoba today,�
said Minister Hedderson. �As the minister responsible for sport and on
behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, I would like to
let the athletes know that we are extremely proud of their achievements
and dedication. No doubt, this will be an incredible experience.�
More than 1,200 athletes, coaches and mission staff from across the
country will be attending the national Games. A Team Canada will be
selected for the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai,
China.
This year�s Newfoundland and Labrador team is comprised of 18 athletes
competing in the sports of bowling, swimming and track and field. Five
coaches and three mission staff are accompanying the team.
The members of the provincial team are: Wanda Burton of
Trinity-Conception (bowling), Lisa Dixon of Trinity-Conception
(bowling), David Jordan of St. John�s (bowling), Preston Spurrell of
C.B.S. (bowling), Darryl Woodrow of Mount Pearl (bowling), Harry
Fitzgerald of St. John�s (swimming), Eleanor Hobbs of Trinity-Conception
(swimming), Jody Michelin of Happy Valley-Goose Bay (swimming), Kate
Power of St. John�s (swimming), Jonathan Seaward of St. John�s
(swimming), Brian Allingham of Happy Valley-Goose Bay (track and field),
Justin Corbin of Exploits (track and field), Sarah Mary Brown of Gander
(track and field), Rosie Kennedy of St. John�s (track and field), Robyn
Kenny of Mount Pearl (track and field), Johnny Philpott of Gander (track
and field), Daniel Ralph of Gander (track and field), and Patrick
Whitehouse of Exploits (track and field).
The five coaches are: Carmel Casey, Marion Cornish, Gina King, Len
Moores and Jean Stoyles.
The three mission staff are: Mary Holloway (team manager), Darrin Reid
and Nelson White.
This year�s Special Olympics team had the opportunity to participate in
the Provincial Team Training Program. For the first time, the athletes
were able to attend provincial training camps to assess needs, set goals
and to better prepare for the Games.
�We are delighted to help support this program,� said Minister Hedderson.
�All athletes deserve the same opportunities. This program has raised
the bar and set a new standard for Special Olympics training and
competition. Again, congratulations and good luck to the athletes. You
are an inspiration to us all!�
