Team Gushue School Tour starts Monday

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, in partnership with the Department of Education, is pleased to announce that The Team Gushue School Tour designed to encourage kids to follow their dreams will begin on Monday (June 12).

Four members of Team Gushue Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols, Jamie Korab, and Mike Adam - will visit 18 schools across the province over five days (June 12-16). The team will speak to students ranging from the kindergarten to junior high level about their journey to winning the Olympic gold medal in Italy last year.

"This is an exciting opportunity for our young people to meet Newfoundland and Labradors very own Olympic gold medalists," said Minister Hedderson. "During their presentation, Brad, Mark, Jamie and Mike will talk about the importance of an active lifestyle, setting goals and working as a team. Team Gushue are wonderful role models and I am sure the kids will be inspired to work that much harder after their visit."

At each school, Team Gushue will deliver a motivational presentation and hand out autograph cards to all of the students. The team plans to talk about the importance of staying in school and being active in daily life.

Minister Burke will be at St. Michaels School in Stephenville Crossing on Monday, at 1p.m., to welcome the team and to stress to students just how much can be gained by hard work and living a healthy, active lifestyle. "These young men represent the best of Newfoundland and Labrador, and show what can be accomplished with dedication and determination," said Minster Burke. "We are delighted that these Olympians see the value of bringing this important message into our schools. Students will see for themselves that Olympic size efforts can produce Olympic-size success."

"We want to show kids that dreams can come true if you are passionate and work hard," said Brad Gushue. "The school tour will give us a chance to show the students of Newfoundland and Labrador that anything is possible."

Team Gushue will be available immediately before each session to answer media questions.
