The following is distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

A total of 195 swimmers from 12 clubs throughout the province met at the Aquarena in St. John�s, May 26-28, to compete in The Long Course Champs Swim Meet. Competition got underway on Friday morning and concluded on Sunday evening.

A male and female top swimmer was named in the following age groups, based on individuals scoring with 5-2-1 points awarded for each first, second or third place finish.

The Jacinta Sheppard Memorial Award, based on the highest ranking swim scored on the FINA Point Chart during finals, was presented to Laura Murray of the Mount Pearl Marlins with a score of 694.

The top male swim was presented to David Forbes of the Mount Pearl Marlins with a score of 663.

Most Improved Team: Deer Lake Dolphins

Team awards are based on total points.

Other meet highlights: The following records were broken (pending verification by the national and provincial governing bodies)

  • Katarina Roxon of the Aqua Aces broke the 200 meter breaststroke Canadian Senior National record in a new time of 3:29.94.
  • David Forbes of the Mount Pearl Marlins broke the 50metre fly provincial record of 27:47 set in 2002 by Justin Kennedy in the 15-17 age group with a new time of 27.23 in Friday�s preliminary heats and then lowered the record to 26.99 in the finals.
  • Gavin Dyke of the Mount Pearl Marlins broke the 800 metre freestyle provincial record held by Steven Murphy (12:21.57, 1999) in the 10 and under age group with a new time of 12:06.8.
  • Nicholas Hogan of the Corner Brook Rapids broke the 800metre freestyle provincial record in the 13-14 age group with a new time of 9:42.92.
  • Owen Daly of the St. John�s Legends broke the 100 metre backstroke provincial record of 1:24.31 held by Skylar Pike (1996) in the 10 and under age group with a new time of 1:23.83.
  • Annual Speedo Awards

    Volunteer of the Year - award for outstanding volunteerism at the club level

  • Norm Higdon (CBS BLUEFINS)
  • Coach of the Year - awarded for outstanding coaching achievement

  • David Shears (Mount Pearl Marlins)
  • Female Swimmer of the Year - awarded for outstanding swimming performance

  • Katarina Roxon (Aqua Aces Swim Club)
  • Male Swimmer of the Year - warded for outstanding swimming performance

  • Tim Rusted (St. John�s Legends)
  • SNL SWIMMER MERIT AWARD - Awarded to a swimmer, who has combined a high academic standard with swimming excellence, and commitment to the sport of swimming evidenced by their dedication to training, fair play and overall interest in club activities.
