Minister expresses condolences

Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, sends condolences today to the family and friends of Doris Saunders, the founding editor of Them Days magazine. Ms. Saunders died Sunday, May 28 at the age of 64.

"Doris Saunders dedication to preserving Labradors rich history will never be forgotten," said Minister Hedderson. "Them Days and the archives are a remarkable legacy. Her work brought the history of Labrador to life in stories, photos, poems and songs."

In 1975, Ms. Saunders was hired to edit a book of oral histories by the Labrador Heritage Society. That book quickly became a quarterly affair called Them Days. The magazine, and its archival annex, have become a Labrador institution and are often described as one of the best collections of material about Labrador.

Ms. Saunders received the Canadian Historical Association's Regional History Prize in 1981 and the Newfoundland Historical Society's heritage award in 1984. She was inducted into the Order of Canada in 1986 and received an honorary degree from Memorial University in 1994.

The funeral will take place at 2:00 p.m. this Wednesday at the Pentecostal Church in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
