The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Track and Field Provincial Championships this weekend

The final School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador provincial championships of the 2005-06 school year will be determined this coming weekend. Track and field athletes will coverage on Marystown as Marystown Central High plays hosts for the Provincial High School Track and Field Championships.

Team champions will be declared in boys and girls. Teams of 15 athletes will accumulate points based on their performance in 14 events. Teams can enter a maximum of two athletes per event and athletes are permitted entry into three individual events plus the relay. Winning teams from regional competitions have advanced to the provincial final as well as the top three individual finishers in each event.

Individual champions will be determined in boys and girls 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3,000m, 1,500 race walk, high jump, long jump, shot put, discus, javelin and the 4 X 100m and 4 X 400m relay.

Teams vying for the championship banner include Marystown Central High, St. Lawrence Academy, Christ the King (Rushoon), Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point), Victoria All Grade (Gaultois), Stephenville High, Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Appalachia High (St. Georges), O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s), Holy Spirit High (Manuels), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Carbonear Collegiate and Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican).

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal. The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winners of each individual event will receive gold, silver and bronze medals.

The team with the most points will also receive the coveted championship banner
