2006 Arts and Letters Awards recipients announced

Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, joined Kevin Major, award-winning author, to present the 2006 Arts and Letters Awards during a ceremony at The Rooms on Saturday evening (May 13).

Government clearly made culture a priority under Budget 2006 with the launch of the provinces first cultural plan, said Minister Hedderson. Under this plan, we particularly want to foster creativity and nurture our emerging talent. That is why we have invested heavily in programs that directly support artists. This includes almost doubling our investment in the Arts and Letters Awards program by providing an additional $50,000 annually. After all, this is how many young Newfoundland and Labrador artists first get the recognition they need to build confidence in their work.

Seventeen prizes were awarded in the Junior Division for entrants, ages 12 to 18. Twenty-six prizes were awarded in the Senior Division. Prizes in both divisions were awarded for literary arts, visual arts and musical composition. In total, over $23,000 in prize money was awarded.

The Percy Janes Novel Award was presented to David Hickey for his manuscript A Cappella.

Kevin Major, chair of the Arts and Letters Committee, said he was particularly pleased with the regional representation of this years winners.

I am delighted that winners come from so many different places across the province, he said. From Rigolet to Chapel Arm, Lewisporte to Paradise, the arts are alive and well in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The presentation of awards was interspersed with readings, a visual presentation and performances by this years winners. There will be an exhibition of selected entries on the fourth floor of The Rooms until May 28, 2006. For further information visit: www.gov.nl.ca/artsandletters.

I encourage everyone who could not make the awards show to visit The Rooms and to be inspired by the work of our talented artists, said Minister Hedderson. I also want to congratulate all the winners and everyone who submitted works in the program. I encourage you to continue to express yourselves creatively. You are proof that Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the most culturally vibrant provinces in Canada.

This year marks the 54th anniversary of the Arts and Letters Awards, one of the longest running cultural programs in the province. Many former winners have gone on to become recognized nationally and internationally. Past recipients include: David Blackwood, Manfred Buchheit, Scott Goudie, Justin Hall, Ben Hansen, Ilse Hughes, Sheilagh OLeary, Paul Parsons, Rae Perlin, Christopher Pratt, and Janice Udell in the visual arts; Cassie Brown, Frank Holden, Harold Horwood, Percy Janes, Ed Kavanagh, Kevin Major, Carmelita McGrath, Paul ONeill, Helen Porter, and Michael Winter in the literary arts; and John Herriott, Michael Parker and Brian Sexton in the musical category.
