The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Two provincial badminton championships this weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will sponsor two provincial badminton tournaments this coming weekend. Teams and individuals will compete in both 3A and 4A events with team champions being crowned, as well as individual champions in girls singles, boys singles, girls doubles, boys doubles and mixed doubles.

Canon Richards High in Flowers Cove is the host school for the 3A event. Seven teams will compete in a two-division format with the top teams advancing to the playoff encounters. Division 1 will see action from Canon Richards High, J.C. Erhardt Memorial (Makkovik), Holy Name of Mary High (Lawn) and Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island). Teams competing in Division 2 include Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Jakeman All Grade (Trout River) and St. Peter�s Academy (Westport). The first team encounters get underway 6:30 Thursday evening and continue throughout Friday. The championship match is scheduled for 5 p.m. Each encounter will consist of one match each of boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles. The team winning three of five will win that encounter. The individual competition will take place on Saturday.

Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts is the host school for the 4A Badminton Championships. Six teams will compete in a two-division format. In Division A teams include Glovertown Academy, Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John�s) and Stephenville High will face off. Competing in Division B will be the host school, Ascension Collegiate, Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap) and Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican).

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner. As well, gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to individual winners in each division.
