The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Four provincial boys basketball and provincial girls hockey championships this weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will crown five new champions this coming weekend. The boys take to the hard court, while the girls take to the ice in hockey and basketball championships.

Clarenville High School will host the Fair Play Boys Basketball tournament. Eight teams will be competing for the coveted championship and sportsmanship banners. The tournament gets underway Friday at 12:50 p.m. at both Clarenville High and Clarenville Middle Schools. The tournament format is a two-division set up with semi-finals and finals scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Competing in Division A will be Clarenville High, Mobile High, Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican), St. Catherines Academy (Mount Carmel). Rounding out the field in Division B will be Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Lewisporte Collegiate and Marystown High.

Holy Name of Mary in Lawn and St. Lawrence Academy are co-hosting the 2A boys provincial basketball. Nine teams will be taking part in the event. The Grey Division, played at the Holy Name of Mary gym will include the host school, Bay D�Espoir Academy (Milltown), Dunne Memorial (St. Mary�s) and Grandys River Collegiate (Burnt Islands). The Blue Division will be hosted by St. Lawrence Academy and will consist of Stella Maris Academy (Trepassey), D.C. Young School (Port Hope Simpson), Holy Cross All Grade (Daniels Hr), and Lakewood Academy (Glenwood). Games get underway 4 p.m. at Holy Name of Mary and 10 a.m. at St. Lawrence gyms. The cross-over games are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday followed by the 1 p.m. championship game.

The 3A Provincial Boys Basketball Championships will be crowned in Ferryland on Saturday afternoon. Eight teams are contesting the title, divided into a two-division format. Division A will see action from Menihek High (Labrador City), Baie Verte High, Baltimore High (Ferryland) and Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point). Division B will consist of Mobile High, Stephenville High, Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville) and St. James High (Port aux Basques). Games get underway 9 a.m. Thursday morning and continue throughout the day and into Friday. The semi-final games are set for 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday followed by a 2 p.m. championship game.

Gander Collegiate is the host school for the 4A Boys Basketball tournament. Eight teams will also be competing for top honours in this event. Division A will see action from Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), Gonzaga High (St. John�s), Fatima Academy (St. Brides) and the host, Gander Collegiate. St. Kevin�s, (Goulds), St. Catherines (Mount Carmel), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Regina High (Corner Brook ) round out the field in Division B. Games will be played at both Gander Collegiate and St. Paul�s Intermediate gyms and get underway 2 p.m. on Friday. The championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.

Meanwhile, the high school girls take to the ice in Bonavista to decide the Girls High School Hockey Championships. Discovery Collegiate is the host school for the event and they will compete in Division 2 with Stephenville High, Roncalli (Port Saunders) and St. Kevin�s (Goulds. Division A will consist of Gonzaga High (St. John�s), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), King Academy (Harbour Breton) and Fogo Island Central High. The first game is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, with round robin games continuing throughout Thursday and Friday. The top four teams advance to the semi-finals scheduled for 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The championship game goes ahead at 1:30 Saturday afternoon.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner.
