The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial cross-country skiing championships this weekend in Corner Brook

The provincial high school cross-country skiing championships go ahead this weekend at the Blow Me Down Ski Club in Corner Brook. Regina High School is hosting the event on behalf of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.

Provincial team champions will be declared in senior girls, senior boys, junior girls and junior boys. The team in each division whose top three skiers finish best will be awarded the championship banner and gold medals. Individual winners in each of these divisions will receive gold, silver or bronze medals. The individual races will be in the freestyle and will consist of a five-kilometre course for senior girls and junior boys, 2.5 kilometre for junior girls and 7.5 kilometre for senior boys.

The relay races will be in the classic race style and will consist of each of the four team members racing a one kilometre course. Relay races will be held in each of the four divisions as well.

Schools competing in the provincial cross country skiing include the host school, Regina High, Canon Richards High of Flowers Cove, Viking Trail Academy from Plum Point, Herdman Collegiate of Corner Brook, St. Peter�s School from Benoit�s Cove, Presentation Junior High and G.C. Rowe Junior High, St. Gerard�s Elementary and J.J. Curling Elementary all of Corner Brook, Stephenville High and Stephenville Middle School, Appalachia High of St. George�s and Harriot Curtis Collegiate of St. Anthony.

Races start at 10:30 a.m., Saturday and will be run senior girls, senior boys, junior girls and junior boys. Individuals will start on 30-second intervals. The relay races will follow and will be started in a mass start.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, is sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.
