Government proclaims "Right to Know Week"

Minister of Justice and Attorney General Tom Marshall has proclaimed September 25-29, 2006, "Right to Know Week" in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Right to Know Week is being recognized throughout the country and in parts of the world as a week to celebrate the rights of individuals to access information in the possession, or under the control, of public bodies," said Minister Marshall. "Freedom of information legislation in jurisdictions in Canada protects and clarifies that right to obtain information and indeed supports this governments intention to be transparent and accountable."

The Williams government proclaimed the new Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (ATIPPA) in 2005 and immediately implemented the access provisions contained in the act. "The access to information process has been working exceptionally well," he said. "Government has responded to over 400 requests for information under the ATIPPA. It is a record we are certainly pleased with, especially for a new process of this proportion. It is a clear indication that our government is upholding its transparency commitments to the people of this province," said Minister Marshall.

The minister also noted that government is actively pursuing proclamation of the privacy provisions of ATIPPA legislation. "We have hired the necessary staff and will be providing comprehensive training and tools for all public bodies to ensure full compliance with the legislation," he said.

"The Williams government fully supports the spirit and intent of "Right to Know Week" and will continue to ensure all facets of government remain open, transparent and accountable to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador." concluded Minister Marshall.
