Silviculture project announced for The Straits and White Bay North

Natural Resources Minister Ed Byrne has announced $400,000 under the 2006 Provincial Silviculture Program for a silviculture project in the district of The Straits and White Bay North, near Roddicton.

Silviculture projects that take place throughout Newfoundland and Labrador play a vital role in sustaining a future wood supply for the province.

A Governments intensive tree planting efforts clearly demonstrate our ongoing commitment to responsible forest management," Minister Byrne said. "These projects also create meaningful employment opportunities that provide a significant boost to local economies, particularly those in rural communities."

Trevor Taylor, MHA for The Straits and White Bay North, enthusiastically greeted the announcement for his district. "The Roddickton area has depended on the forest industry for many years and as with any industry, it is essential to implement sustainable management practices," said Minister Taylor. "This silviculture project will not only help rejuvenate the wood supply in the area, but will create much needed employment for area residents."

The project will involve the planting of 1.6 million white spruce tree seedlings over 1,100 hectares. Work will also see the thinning of roughly 135 hectares of immature balsam fir forest.

The project will continue until late August and is expected to create 264 person weeks of employment.

Funding for the Provincial Silviculture Program was increased in Budget 2006 as part of a three-year plan to increase the total funding for the silviculture program in the province to $10.3 million. This year the Forestry Services Branch of the Department of Natural Resources will produce approximately 15 million tree seedlings for planting throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
