Minister announces public review of 2006 wood supply analysis

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, has released the 2006 Wood Supply Analysis for public review and comment as part of the process to determine the amount of wood that can be cut over the next five years.

Effective today, the 2006 Wood Supply Analysis will be subject to a 30-day public review and once the analysis has been complete, government will announce the 2006-2010 Annual Allowable Cut (AAC) for the island portion of the province.

"A critical component of managing the provinces forests on a sustainable basis is ensuring the general public has the opportunity to have input into how this resource is managed," said Minister Byrne. "The release of the wood supply analysis for public review provides the forest industry, interested stakeholders and the general public with a detailed description of the various components involved in the wood supply analysis. This will help all our stakeholders get a better understanding of how government determines the amount of wood that will be allowed to be cut in the various forest management districts on the island."

The first formalized wood supply analysis for the island was undertaken in 1989. The formulation of a new AAC is repeated every five years which allows government to update changes in the forest land base and implement new forest management strategies.

"The range of values wanted from our forests presents significant challenges in determining AACs," said Minister Byrne. "However, it is important to remember the underlying principle behind the setting of the AAC is to ensure the long-term sustainability of our forest resource is not compromised."

Minster Byrne is encouraging individuals and organizations to review and provide comment on the wood supply analysis process so that their input can be assessed and incorporated into the final AAC determination.

The 2006 wood supply analysis can be accessed from the following Web site: www.gov.nl.ca/forestry/publications/2006islandwood.pdf . The public has until February 19, 2006, to submit comments to the Department of Natural Resources.
