Centreville-Wareham-Trinity to Benefit from the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund

The Town of Centreville-Wareham-Trinity will undertake a $96,612 upgrade of the municipal sewage treatment plant with the help of federal and provincial contributions made under the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

Over the past number of months the sewage treatment plant at Centreville-Wareham-Trinity has been experiencing mechanical problems. The project will repair the equipment and conduct building renovations. The federal government will provide $32,204, while the provincial share will be $45,408, and the municipality will provide the remaining $19,000.

"Investments in community infrastructure like we are making in Centreville-Wareham-Trinity improves the environment and the quality of life for families," said the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). "Canada's new government is helping to build stronger communities and I am proud of our involvement in this project."

"I am delighted with this funding announcement for the Town of Centreville-Wareham-Trinity," said Harry Harding, MHA for the district of Bonavista North. "The Town will now be able to address the much needed repairs at the sewage treatment plant and, consequently, eliminate the resulting environmental concerns that had existed for the surrounding area."

"We are pleased to see this funding come through because the wastewater treatment plant was not operating due to mechanical failure and this was an environmental concern," said Mayor Malcolm Rogers. "We were naturally concerned and realized that this situation could not be permitted to continue because of contamination of the adjacent area."

The $84 million, six-year Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada. The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities, acting on behalf of communities, helps set the strategic direction of the Agreement and identify priorities under the capacity-building component of the Agreement.
