Provincial ministers pleased with federal funding for eastern Labrador performance space

Paul Shelley, Minister responsible for Labrador Affairs, is one of many elected officials in Newfoundland and Labrador who is pleased with federal funding of $750,000 for performance space in Happy Valley-Goose Bay announced today.

"I am impressed with this federal commitment to the arts in Labrador," said Minister Shelley, who noted that this is a significant increase in funding from what had been committed by the previous federal administration. "We are certainly pleased that cost-shared performance space in eastern Labrador is moving forward. We are also hopeful that an application under the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund for further federal funding has been favourably received."

"I am delighted that Canadian Heritage is partnering with the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and the province to help develop this important project," said Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "The young artists in Labrador have long been waiting for an appropriate venue to develop and express their artistic creativity, and Im sure this space will ultimately serve as the cultural hub of the region."

"I have been working hard with many others to see the performance space become a reality. It is certainly welcome news that the federal government is on board with us to ensure that people of Labrador have a place to showcase their talents," added John Hickey, MHA for Lake Melville and Parliamentary Secretary for Labrador Affairs.

In Happy Valley-Goose Bay on March 13, the ministers and MHA Hickey joined Premier Williams when he announced that capital investments of over $47.3 million were in the works for Labrador as part of the upcoming provincial budget. Included in the announcement was a $1.9 million provincial contribution to proceed with performance space in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
