Province to Host Federal/Provincial/Territorial Justice Meetings

Federal/provincial/territorial (FPT) ministers responsible for justice will descend upon Humber Valley Resort at Little Rapids this week as the province plays host to the 2006 Annual Federal/Provincial/Territorial Justice Meetings. The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, said that he looks forward to welcoming justice and public safety ministers to the provinces west coast and to working collectively to improve the delivery of justice services for all Canadians.

The minister said this weeks meetings will allow him to raise issues of great importance to this provinces justice system with provincial and federal ministers from across the country.

"Given the recommendations of the recently released Turner report, I am pleased that the issue of bail reform will be on the agenda. Furthermore, as I have done on previous occasions, I will be joining my provincial and territorial colleagues in calling upon the federal government to increase federal funding for legal aid," said Minister Marshall. The minister also highlighted policing, the wrongfully convicted, dangerous offenders, Unified Family Court expansion and Aboriginal justice as other topics he will bring forward this week in his capacity as co-chair.

Minister Marshall noted that he is pleased his colleagues will have an opportunity to experience the provinces west coast. "Delegates from all across the country will have an opportunity to experience the world-class amenities of Humber Valley Resort, and to tour the Humber Valley and Bay of Islands regions, the City of Corner Brook, as well as Gros Morne," continued Minister Marshall. "I look forward to sharing the natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality of the west coast, and indeed welcome the economic spin-off opportunities for local business."

The 2006 meetings run from October 11 to October 13. There will be a brief photo opportunity for media prior to the start of Thursday, October 12, FPT meeting at 8:45 a.m. at the Eagles Perch, Humber Valley Resort. A news conference will take place at the conclusion of the meetings on Friday October 13, at 1:30 p.m. at the Eagles Perch.
