Justice Minister and RNC Police Chief congratulate 2006 graduating class
of RNC Recruit Training Program

Justice Minister and Attorney General Tom Marshall and Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Chief of Police Joe Browne offered congratulations today to the 2006 graduating class of the RNC Recruit Training Program.

On behalf of Premier Williams and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, I want to congratulate our graduates on such a tremendous accomplishment and commend their desire to join the ranks of the RNC and embark on a career in public service. said Minister Marshall.

Successfully completing this program is no easy task, said RNC Police Chief Joe Browne. The Recruit Training Program, developed in partnership with the RNC and Memorial University, is a first-class program that offers the highest standard of modern training in law enforcement.  These outstanding cadets are more than ready to serve the people of this province.

Minister Marshall said government initiated the Recruit Training Program to ensure more highly trained RNC officers are available to patrol our streets and protect our families and communities. Some 26 graduates will receive their badges in a graduation ceremony tomorrow in Corner Brook.  They are a part of the 75 police officers government committed to training over a three-year period in Budget 2004.

We have in fact surpassed the projected recruitment level by hiring all 28 graduates in the inaugural year.  The 26 cadets who graduate tomorrow will be hired directly and next year we will see another 30 recruits enrolled in the program, continued Chief Browne. This type of commitment will only produce positive results for the force and the level of policing services in this province.

Minister Marshall said that the Williams Government has committed to providing a high level of public protection and has worked diligently to provide both the RNC and RCMP the human and operational resources required to ensure the people of this province feel safe and sound in their communities.

In Budget 2006 alone we increased our investment in policing by an unprecedented $10 million allowing us to create new constable positions, purchase much needed equipment and provide training opportunities.  This investment has also allowed us to address administrative issues raised in the recent Auditor Generals report, noted Minister Marshall.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has a long tradition of outstanding service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.  This government is committed to building on that history and record of performance and will make the necessary investments to ensure the RNC is a world class police force in the 21st century, concluded Minister Marshall.

The graduation ceremony will take place tomorrow at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook at 2:00 p.m.  This years ceremony is special because it will also mark 20 years of policing in Corner Brook for the RNC.
