Government receives Lamer Inquiry report

Justice Minister and Attorney General Tom Marshall was presented with the public inquiry report on the administration of justice by Commissioner Antonio Lamer today in Ottawa.

Minister Marshall said Commissioner Lamer would have preferred to present the report in Newfoundland and Labrador; however a recent health problem prevents him from traveling over the next few weeks. "On behalf of Premier Williams and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, I would like to thank Commissioner Lamer and his staff for their hard work and dedication to the completion of the inquiry report and wish former Chief Justice Lamer a speedy recovery," said Minister Marshall.

"We will immediately begin analyzing the reports findings and recommendations," explained Minister Marshall. "When that process is complete we look forward to making the report public and implementing any recommendation that will improve the administration of justice in this province."

The Lamer Inquiry, announced in March 2003, is a public inquiry into alleged miscarriages of justice in the cases of Gregory Parsons, Randy Druken and Ronald Dalton. Specifically, the inquiry has a mandate to review the investigations and circumstances surrounding the resulting criminal proceedings commenced against Gregory Parsons and Randy Druken. The inquiry was also asked to review why Ronald Dalton's appeal of his murder conviction, took eight years before his appeal was heard by the Court of Appeal.
