Justice Minister to meet with federal counterparts

Justice Minister and Attorney General Tom Marshall said today he looks forward to meeting with federal Public Protection Minister Stockwell Day and federal Justice Minister and Attorney General Vic Toews early next week in Ottawa.

"I have already had a very positive meeting with federal Fisheries Minister and regional representative, Loyola Hearn and look forward to meeting and building a strong working relationship with my federal counterparts to enhance the delivery of justice services for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Marshall.

Minister Marshall said the recently announced federal budget commitments to policing, victims and corrections are consistent with the law and order investments announced in the provincial budget aimed at ensuring the people of Newfoundland and Labrador feel safe and secure in their communities. "Additional RCMP officers most certainly corresponds with our provincial investment of $10 million to enhance police presence and to equip our police forces with the necessary tools to properly police communities throughout this province."

"The increased investment for victims of crime in this years federal budget relates to our recent expansion of victim services that ensures both adult and child victims who testify in criminal proceedings have a positive support system in place," added Minister Marshall. He also suggested federal funding to enhance correctional facilities comes at a favourable time, "Government is currently reviewing options for the future of Her Majestys Penitentiary and improvements at other correctional facilities throughout the province; federal funding to enhance these facilities would be greatly welcomed."

Minister Marshall said he looks forward to discussing these budget items in greater detail and deciphering how they will benefit Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. "Seeking clarification on federal budget items and presenting the provincial case for increased federal funding for legal aid and the unified family courts will top my agenda when I meet with my federal colleagues."

Both meetings are scheduled for Monday, May 15, in Ottawa.
