Hi-Point Industries wins 2006 Exporter of the Year Award

The Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, Kathy Dunderdale, today announced that Hi-Point Industries Ltd. of Bishops Falls is the winner of the 2006 Exporter of the Year Award. The winner was announced at the 21st Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards luncheon in St. Johns. The other finalists for the award were BAE-Newplan Group Limited of Mount Pearl and C&W Industrial Fabrication and Marine Equipment Ltd. of Bay Bulls.

"This award is designed to promote exporters as corporate role models and to acknowledge their contribution to the provincial economy," said Minister Dunderdale. "The department endeavours to stimulate greater involvement in exporting by the provinces business community and to develop awareness of the importance of exporting to the provinces economic future."

Minister Dunderdale and Brian Whiteway, vice-president and chief financial officer of ICAN, the 2005 award winner, presented the award to Hi-Point Industries.

"Since we were formed, the company has looked at different opportunities in the marketplace and when there was an opportunity, we seized it," said Bill Butler, president of Hi-Point Industries Ltd. "Were thrilled to win this award. Its a tribute to the hard work of the employees of Hi-Point Industries."

Hi-Point Industries was incorporated in 1983 with the mission of developing an environmentally safe, all natural, oil absorbent for the containment of hydrocarbon spills. The company offers a wide range of products including oil absorbents, horticultural peat and a variety of containment booms for both land and water use. It began exporting in its first year of operations and expanded its market reach every year. The company now exports to over two dozen countries in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and has plans to expand into Southeast Asia.

BAE-Newplan Group Limited is a Newfoundland and Labrador-based engineering consulting firm and a wholly-owned subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin Inc. BAE-Newplan Group represents the corporations centre of excellence in ports, marine, and coastal development and has provided engineering services to projects in almost a dozen countries around the world. It is this group which generates the companys export revenues.

C&W has been in operation since 1972 and employs up to 70 people. The company specializes in the manufacture of seafood harvesting, unloading and processing equipment, offshore contracted items and aluminum work/pleasure crafts. They have been exporting since 1985 and have solidified their position in a number of key export markets. This is not the first time C&W have been recognized for their exporting success. C&W were Newfoundland and Labrador Export Award winners in 1996 and 2000.

Forty-six companies were nominated for the 2006 Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards by industry associations, chambers of commerce, other companies and government agencies. Finalists were selected by an evaluation committee composed of staff from Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and representatives from CME, NATI, NEIA, NLOWE, ACOA and Industry Canada. Criteria used in the evaluation process are developed from the National Export Awards.
