March proclaimed Youth
Science Month
Innovation, Trade and Rural Development
Minister Kathy Dunderdale and Education Minister Joan Burke today
announced that March is Youth Science Month in Newfoundland and
Labrador. A proclamation has been signed and events that focus on youth
science will be held throughout the province.
Government recognizes the importance of supporting science and the
vital role it plays in the development of our childrens education. We
also recognize the role science plays in fostering an innovative culture
and the positive impact that has on our economy, said Minister
Dunderdale. It is essential our students know about opportunities
available to them before making important decisions about their futures
and Youth Science Month helps to promote the value and educational
significance of science for youth in this province.
Science and technology are integral parts of our society, and therefore
integral parts of our education system, said Minister Burke. The
science and technology programs in our schools, and local and regional
science fairs, encourage students to learn through hands-on experiences
that build valuable scientific skills. These are skills that will last a
lifetime, and we will strive to ensure students have modern learning
resources, and interesting and relevant curriculum.
Youth Science Month is a national awareness campaign that promotes young
Canadians getting involved in science. Since the first declaration of
March as Youth Science Month across Canada in 2002, eight provinces have
declared their support. For further information, visit
